Carlina Baptista is a 22 year old Rhode Island native; this is her second season dancing with DanceWork New York City! She is a recent graduate with a bachelors in Psychology from Pace University; after graduation, Carlina accepted the position of Assistant Supervisor at one of the many residential group homes, for adults with developmental disabilities, under Young Adults Institute. Dance has had her heart since the young age of 5, beginning with her training in 2002 at Step by Step Dance in Fitness in Pawtucket, RI under the direction of Kristen Lee McTavish. In 2005, Carlina began competitive dance at Sandy Soares Dance Arts under the instruction of Sandy Soares in Pawtucket, RI. That was where Carlina learned about her flexibility and experienced the many different styles of dance. In 2007, Angela Mendez Pontarelli took Carlina under her wing at Rising Stars Dance Academy in North Providence, RI. She continued to dance and share her passion with audiences of all kinds, on many different stages for the next nine years; it was with Angela where she discovered her true potential. Upon moving to New York City, Carlina auditioned and successfully joined ASHA Dance Company, performing with them at many different events including, NACHMO, The Hatch, GreenSpace as well as performing in their annual 2016 show at Kumble Theater in Brooklyn, “Nature Untouched.” In 2017, Carlina performed as well as choreographed for ASHA’s annual show, “Generation Speak.” This past June, Carlina once again performed and choreographed for the annual show entitled, “The Sins of Our Fathers.” She continues her dance career, taking classes, performing at events, as a DanceWorks New York City dancer and now, she is excited to be one of the choreographers for Season 15!
