Tyra Strong was born in Seattle, Washington, but spent a majority of her life in Sharon, Massachusetts. She began dancing at age 11 and competed in the styles of jazz, tap, modern, and hip-hop. After high school, she moved to NY and became a dance and exercise science double major at Hofstra University, where her training began to expand to the world of concert dance. She heavily studied various ballet and modern forms and performed work by artists such as Earl Mosley, Karla Wolfangle, Dyane Harvey-Salaam, Caroline Copeland, and Larry Kegwin. She also was involved in Hofstra’s Danceworks and Transcendance, where she performed and choreographed works in the commercial styles of hip-hop, contemporary, and jazz.

Tyra is currently pursuing a career as a Physician Assistant while continuing her dance training at Broadway Dance Center and Steps on Broadway. She has recently performed in Anthology33 and Prelude and is looking forward to appearing in the Young Choreographer’s Festival this year. This is Tyra’s fifth season as a dancer with DanceWorks New York City and her first season choreographing.
